The Viral Minion Database is maintained by the Laboratory of Viral Genomics and Bioinformatics at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

The main goal of this repository is to provide a comprehensive and validated set of profile HMMs designed for specific taxonomic viral groups.

The profiles HMMs are can be used to:

  • Detect specific viral taxa in genomic and metagenomic datasets;
  • Detect novel viruses;
  • Reconstruct specific viral sequences from unassambled data using the models as seed in progressive assembly;
  • Detect multigenic viral elements (proviruses) in assembled host genomes.
